Deacon Melvin Hughes transitioned from this life to life everlasting on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at the age of 84. He was a native and resident of Algiers, LA. Son of the late Joseph Henry Hughes, Sr., Augustine Elnora Hughes and Ruth Anderson Hughes. He was educated at Peter S. Lawton Elementary School and a graduate of L B Landry Jr./Sr. High School Class of 1954. After his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in June, 1956. He was employed at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic School for 40 years and retired in 1999. For nearly 50 years he served as the Chairman of the Deacon Board and Superintendent of the Sunday School Ministry at the Olive Branch B. C. He was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life Rosemary Clark Hughes on April 4, 1960. Devoted father of the late Lynne Toler, Alvin Hughes, Sr. (Vanessa) of Bogalusa, La., Jill Hughes Nickerson (James, Sr.) of Wynne, Arkansas, the late Justin Hughes, Sr.; Cynthia Butler-McIntyre (Ronney) and Virgie Beverly of New Orleans and the late Clinton Price, Sr. Grandfather of 15; Great Grandfather of 16 and Great Great Grandfather of 2. Loving Brother of Vera Hughes, Annie Mae Schaffers, Augustine Butler, Evelyn Peterson, Gail Dorsey and Sandra Hughes Collins (Nathaniel, Sr.), Peter Hughes (Ciglenda) of Prairieville, La., Rodney, Sr. (Nelda) of Houston, Texas and Richard Lloyd and the late Rev. Joseph, Jr., Calvin, Henry, Jerry, Phillip Hughes, Harold Lloyd, Joyce McGinnis and Irma Henry. Devoted sister-in-law Rosemary Lee Hughes and a host of nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Relatives, family, friends, also Pastors, Officers and members of St. Joseph B. C. and neighboring churches are invited to attend the Homegoing Celebration at Olive Branch B. C., 1134 Branch Joseph/Odeon Avenue, Algiers, LA on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Pastor Reginald Nicholas, Sr., Officiating.
